UNC slams Government’s move to block Private Member’s Bill
“The Sedition Repeal Bill, 2019”
The move by the Keith Rowley regime to block the Private Member’s Bill, “The Sedition Repeal Bill, 2019”, all but confirms that our democracy is under threat from this government.
Over the last month, we have witnessed high profile critics of the government being investigated under the Sedition Act for simply expressing their Constitutional right of free expression.
There have also been widespread opinions expressed in the media that the Sedition Act as it stands is dangerously outdated and needs reform. This Private Member’s Bill is a reflection of public opinion and sought to do just that. The Bill was brought by Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, who stated that the Sedition Act is unconstitutional, in breach of fundamental rights and should be repealed.
Instead of addressing the concerns of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, the people he is meant to serve, Keith Rowley chose instead to turn his back on the voice of the people.
The Keith Rowley-led Government seems bent on eroding the rights of citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. But the United National Congress, along with all citizens who cherish our democracy, will never let that happen. We will continue to fight to preserve the rights of all citizens of our beloved country.
