UNC slams Government’s failure to deal with crime
The United National Congress is expressing alarm over the unabated continuation of murders and the increasing incidences of crime in the country which is causing distress for law-abiding citizens. Just look at the headlines of our daily newspapers in the last 24 hours.
Kill for kill in Caparo
Six bullets end Carissa’s life
Demons took my child
Pundit shot, worshipper killed during pooja
Siparia man thrown in well dies
Tunapuna woman 20, murdered
Murdered woman’s family living in fear
In a statement, the party said these headlines reflect a failed Minister of National Security. Stuart Young has again proved useless at another task given to him by the Rowley government.
It is appalling that people cannot even pray in peace and with the comfort that they are in a safe space. This Government has failed to put any measures in place to fulfill its mandate in protecting citizens and continues to be a Government of all talk and no action.
These incidents are unacceptable and indicative of the rampant lawlessness taking place in the country, where citizens can no longer feel safe anywhere, even in their houses of worship.
The party noted that young women have fallen victim to murderers – three women were killed in just four days – and we are yet to hear from the National Security Minister on any proposals to protect our mothers, sisters and daughters.
Minister Young needs to secure our people instead of patrolling Facebook.
Last week, as the Opposition brought a motion calling for action on this very issue of violence against women, the response from the Government was inadequate.
It is clear that the PNM is not up to the task, and what is needed now is decisive leadership, and a team that has the experience and proven track record to provide a safe environment for our citizens.
The UNC continues to call on this Rowley Government to get serious about the business of governing and take steps to secure our nation.
