UNC: Prime Minister’s interview nothing but Government PR
“The Prime Minister spent two hours on a morning talk show in a desperate bid to repair his Government’s image and deflect attention from their failures.” This, according to Public Relations Officer of the United National Congress, Anita Haynes.
“Instead of engaging in PR and wasting citizens’ time, the Prime Minister should have spent his time accounting to the people of this country,” Senator Haynes said.
“Dr Rowley needs a reality check,” she said. “While citizens are struggling daily to make ends meet, with thousands unemployed, including close to 10,000 from the restructuring of Petrotrin, the Prime Minister provided little hope of better days to come.”
“That he could say, with a straight face, that the PNM is doing a good job at governance, is nothing short of astounding,” the UNC PRO said.
“To make matters worse, he chose this forum to defend the lease by the Government of a property owned by the Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi, amounting to millions of dollars, claiming the ‘proper procedures’ were followed,” the UNC Senator said. “The Prime Minister claimed that he ensured that the AG was not in the room when the matter came before Cabinet. But this, as well as the AG’s claim that he recused himself, is not enough. No matter how they try to spin it, it is highly unethical, and quite possibly illegal.”
“This Government has shown time and again that they cannot be trusted, so no, Mr Prime Minister, we do not believe that everything is above board with this lease arrangement.”
“This Rowley-led Government is ineffective, incompetent, and no amount of PR gimmicks will convince the citizens otherwise,” the UNC PRO said.
“The UNC remains the best choice to undo the mess created by the PNM Government, as we have a proven track record of performance; a leader and a team that have the expertise and capability to move our nation forward,” Senator Haynes said. “Dr Rowley should heed the calls by the people and call the election now.”
