Opposition votes No to Budget of Betrayals
This evening the Opposition continued its campaign to have this Government’s oppressive, restrictive, and cruel Budget withdrawn by voting No in the Motion for the Budget to be read a second time.
During the budget debate today, when the Question was put for the Bill entitled “Act to provide for the service of Trinidad and Tobago for the Financial year ending 30th September 2023,” the Opposition voted No, as it is our view that this draconian fiscal plan of suppression should not go forward given the immense hardship which it will place on an already burdened nation.
In my response to the Budget on Friday, I made a clear call on behalf of the people of Trinidad and Tobago on the Government to withdraw this Budget. Today, as an Opposition, we used our Parliamentary power to stand in support of the people against a Government whose Budget is a betrayal of the principles of good governance and socio-economic development.
The Rowley-led Government continues to display an abhorrent level of arrogance toward the people of our country and used its majority to continue to push its heartless fiscal package forward to the Standing Finance Committee. I assure the population that the Opposition UNC will ensure that this Government is held accountable. We will expose their lies, deceit and incompetence in the Standing Finance Committee.
I repeat my call on the Prime Minister to withdraw this Budget now.
