Newly installed Chinese Ambassador meets with Trade Minister
Senator the Honourable Vasant Bharath, Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment and Minister in the Ministry of Finance and the Economy received a courtesy call from His Excellency Huang Xing Yuan, newly installed Chinese Ambassador on Friday 7th June, 2013. This is the very first of the Chinese Ambassador’s official Ministerial courtesy calls.
The meeting sought to bring into focus the recent visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, and particular to discuss details on accessing the concessionary loan. His Excellency stated that he has an ambitious plan to improve the bilateral trade relations between the two countries, a goal that he is confident will be achieved in light of the recent Presidential visit. He stated that ‘Trinidad and Tobago is the most attractive economy in the Caribbean Region’.
Senator Bharath spoke of the Government’s interest to access the loan from China, to assist specifically with specific projects, in the maritime sector in the first instance.
The Chinese Ambassador was accompanied by Ms. Ms LIU Ying, Head of Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy; whilst senior Ministry officials sitting in on the meeting were Ms. Sandra Indar, Permanent Secretary and Mr. Randall Karim, Director, Policy and Strategy.
