MPs Support Protests
MPs for the area, Rodney Charles and Dr Roodal Moonilal have noted the deafening silence by the Government in the face of protests taking place throughout the country and this morning at No.2 Junction, and various other parts of Barrackpore. These areas border both the constituencies of Naparima and Oropouche East.
Both MPs are expressing support for this morning’s protests.
Bad road conditions, rising unemployment rates, increasing poverty and income inequality were the main reasons for the scrap iron dealers, workers and residents protesting this morning.
It is unfortunate that citizens, in face of a Government that refuses to listen, must continuously resort to protests to voice their displeasure in the hope of being heard.
With the Government’s ill conceived, six month ban on the export of scrap iron, citizens at the lower end of the social ladder feel that they are especially being targeted, and are frightened for their very survival and future.
During these difficult times, now is not the time to cut jobs and limit employment opportunities, but rather develop comprehensive, strategic plans to diversify our economy, increase economic activity, improve agricultural production, assist small businesses and reduce taxes.
It is time that this Rowley regime understands that they have a duty to serve all citizens and address the needs of everyone. In 2022, citizens should not be made to feel like the only way this Government listens is through fiery protests and burning tyres.
