MP Khadijah Ameen’s International Women’s Day greeting
As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2024 under the theme of “Inspire Inclusion,” I take this opportunity to endorse the message of inclusion and the remarkable difference it makes for us as women and us as a nation moving forward together. As a mixed-race woman in a cosmopolitan nation, inclusion in Trinidad and Tobago, a country whose national anthem includes the words “every creed and race find and equal place” we must look beyond race and religion to inspire inclusion and consider gender, socioeconomic and political inclusion as well as inclusion of persons with disabilities.
I take this opportunity to honor the leadership approach of former Prime Minister, now Leader of Opposition Honorable Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar, an icon of empowerment and inclusivity. Kamla Persad Bissessar’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and the triumph of resilience. Rising from humble beginnings, shattering barriers and blazing a trail to become the first female Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, making history and inspiring generations of women around the world.
Throughout her tenure, Kamla Persad Bissessar championed inclusivity in governance, leading with compassion and a steadfast commitment to uplifting marginalized voices. Under her leadership, Trinidad and Tobago witnessed significant strides in gender equality, education, healthcare and economic empowerment, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable society.
Beyond her political accomplishments, Kamla Persad Bissessar’s influence transcends borders. She has become a beacon of hope for women and girls, proving that no dream is too ambitious and no obstacle too daunting to overcome. Her unwavering dedication to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women has inspired countless individuals to pursue their aspirations and advocate for change.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, I urge more women who find themselves in places of leadership in religion, business, administration, community work or politics, to find ways to make our respective spaces more inclusive and perhaps draw inspiration from the remarkable journey of women like Kamla Persad Bissessar. Emulate their courage, their resilience, and their unwavering commitment, as we work together to forge a more inclusive world where every woman is empowered to thrive, with our men and boys thriving alongside us.
