Kamla: This Corpus Christi let us follow Christ’s example, and ensure goodness in all our actions, thoughts and deeds
As Leader of the Opposition, I would like to extend warm greetings to our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters as well as other members of the Christian Community of Trinidad and Tobago on the celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
Corpus Christi is one of the most sacred celebrations in the Christian Calendar as it honours the feast of the Eucharistic sacrifice, the feast of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the feast of the Real Presence of Jesus.
In essence, Corpus Christi symbolizes the Eucharist and Communion, identifying the belief in the death of Christ and his resurrection.
Over the years, the significance of Corpus Christi has expanded to commemorate the presence of God amongst us. It is a symbol of redemption through the personal sacrifice by Jesus Christ who offered his own body and blood to save mankind from punishment.
Therefore, as we observe this special day as a nation, it gives an opportunity for us all, regardless of our various faiths, to remember that God is always with us.
In truly acknowledging and honouring God’s presence amongst us, as a people, we must restore goodness in all our actions, thoughts and deeds.
Today, our beloved nation is in need of hope and faith. We see that so many are in desperate and needy situations while others are uncertain about their future.
By offering acts of kindness, goodwill, assistance and charity towards those in need, not only would we be able to bring relief, but we can demonstrate renewed dedication towards achieving our shared vision of a better and more prosperous future for Trinidad and Tobago.
I ask all citizens to use this opportunity to reflect on where we are, and what needs to be done to transform our country.
Further, I call on those in authority to reflect on the true principles offered by Corpus Christi and use the inspiration that comes from Christ’s sacrifice for humanity, to sacrifice their own desires, so that decisions can be made for the benefit of all citizens.
Today’s observance also offers another significant aspect to celebrate: the diversity of our people. I am always proud of our people and their willingness to participate in all aspects of our culture and the various religious traditions that make up this beautiful twin-island Republic.
Let us use this day to renew our bonds of friendship and strengthen national unity. We must always put God in front and follow Him in all that we do and hope to accomplish.
I convey best wishes to the national community for a safe and meaningful celebration of Corpus Christi.
