UNC Youth supports ‘people power’ reforms
The youth arm of the UNC strongly supports the proposed amendments and commends the Honorable Prime Minister for her political courage and strength. Our society has matured and grown and is much more in favour of majority representation and service.
Young people of Trinidad & Tobago have for years made their views clear that our constitution must be reformed in a way that takes the power of politicians and places it into the hands of the people. Measures which increase the power that people can exercise over the politicians is a victory for our democracy.
For too long minority representation has determined and decided our nation’s course. The Term limits, Right to Recall and Run Off Elections all provide the most efficient and effective mechanisms which seek not only to strengthen our democracy but also to protect and facilitate its natural development by giving the people more power over governance.
We commend our Prime Minister and Political Leader on her fortitude and innovative vision along with her commitment to widening democracy and putting more political power into the hands of the people. Few leaders display such confidence and determination that they would advocate measures to limit their own hold on power, and provide citizens with the ability to force elected representatives to live up to their duty of serving. What makes the measures even more significant is the extent of consultations that took place across Trinidad & Tobago allowing concerns to be voiced and minds to be informed.
We are also very confident that the measures brought by Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar will ensure that representatives of political parties pay closer attention to the views of citizens, and work harder to deliver on people’s deepest ambitions for success and progress.
The UNC Youth Arm stands in full support of the Constitution Amendment Bill and believe that the measures will have the impact of reflecting how we as a people and a nation have grown and will continue to progress.
