UNC Women call on Jack to apologise
THE Women’s Arm of the United National Congress (UNC) is today calling on Chaguanas West MP, Jack Warner, to apologise for what they have described as “his incessant misogynistic diatribe”.
The call comes following criticisms from Warner over Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s appearance and clothing as she attended the party’s fund raising event last Friday.
In a statement issued Monday, the Women’s Arm stated: “The Prime Minister has always made clear that her priority is people, and she attended the party’s fundraising event last Friday with the intention of directly and personally spending time with party supporters and activists.”
But in what they have described as Warner’s “disappointing and incessant pettiness and misogynistic diatribe” the UNC Women’s Arm said: “What Mr Warner saw was an opportunity to ignore real people-issues, and continue a childish public tirade against the Prime Minister.”
“It is a very sad moment in the history of Opposition politics when a leader’s sole purpose in politics is to publicly launch personal attacks on a woman leader. Mr Warner spends his days and nights formulating the most indecent ways to attack the Prime Minister. He appears to now believe that his job as an MP is to continuously harangue a woman leader.”
The release stated that with just over 190 countries in the world, Trinidad & Tobago should feel proud that it is one of only 27 countries led by a very capable and internationally respected leader.
“Therefore in addition to demanding that Mr Warner apologises to the Prime Minister, and to every woman in our country, we are also calling on the other Opposition party leader, Dr Keith Rowley, to say publicly whether he supports this kind of puerile public discussion. Dr Rowley should say whether he thinks it is right or wrong that women in Trinidad & Tobago should be castigated purely on their basis of their gender.”
The Women’s Arm added: “We salute our Prime Minister and stand solidly on her side for making possible what has for years been seen as impossible – by being a leader for all people, who works hard and still finds the time to stand proudly among citizens and stay in touch with the people.”
