UNC Disaster Response – Plan of Action
Statement by The Hon Kamla Persad Bissessar Political Leader of the United National Congress and Leader of the Opposition
My friends, it is heartbreaking to see the level of destruction from flood waters affecting thousands of people across our nation, and I thank our UNC councillors and MPs who have been on the ground throughout the night helping people in need. These hardworking members of team UNC, along with volunteers will continue to work today to provide relief.
I am heartened by the positive response by kind citizens to this national disaster, many opened up their homes to displaced families, some providing hot meals, clean clothes and bedding, even making room for pets.
As we brace ourselves for more rainfall in the days ahead, I again urge all citizens to remain vigilant and prepare as much as possible to secure your homes and loved ones.
Remember to contact your Regional Corporation should you require assistance. The UNC will be opening its headquarters in Couva to collect relief items for distribution to affected families.
At this critical time, I call on all citizens to work together – be your brothers’ and sisters’ keepers – let’s look out for each other and do what we can to help those in need.
