UNC announces 55 Local Government Candidates

The United National Congress continues to show its readiness for the upcoming Local Government Elections as Political Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar, for a second time in as many weeks, presented the Candidates that the party has selected thus far at last night’s Monday Night Forum in Debe.

Having initially announced its first batch of candidates at the party’s Congress on Sunday 18th August 2019, the UNC introduced additional candidates for the San Fernando City Corporation and some for the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation as part of its dynamic line up last night. This brings the total up to fifty-five (55) candidates announced to date.

As the UNC Leader presented the candidates she pledged to the hundreds present, “I tell you we have a plan, a mission, a vision, and I will take you there. Together we will walk that road to victory. Before you know it, the change will come.”

As at Monday 26th August 2019 the UNC had undertaken a meticulous, detailed and stringent screening process for eleven (11) Local Government Bodies inclusive of the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation, Princes Town Regional Corporation, Penal Debe Regional Corporation, Siparia Regional Corporation, Point Fortin Borough Corporation, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation, Arima Borough Cooperation, Couva Tabaquite Talparo Regional Corporation, Chaguanas Borough Corporation and the San Fernando City Corporation.

The party began its screening process in July having received over 400 nomination forms which comprised citizens from diverse backgrounds, age groups, professions and religious beliefs.

Significantly, the party received nominations from hundreds of young people who have raised their hands to fight for better governance in their communities under the banner of the United National Congress. This large inflow of youth support was equally matched by a large number of nominees coming forward from traditionally PNM-held Corporations and seats, highlighting the need for better representation in these areas.

The United National Congress has been thoroughly impressed by the calibre and skills of the nominees who have appeared before the Screening Committee, given the dynamic mix of intellect, community linkages, grass root involvement, talents and vision they possess. A common quality in all nominees has been the thrust to fight for better governance of our nation.

Those nominees who were not selected have not only pledged to support the candidates that were selected, but have actually began working with them to ensure success at the polls, given the dire state of our national affairs.

The United National Congress continues the screening process on Wednesday 28th August 2019 at the UNC’s East/West Corridor People Centre in Tunapuna from 6:30pm at which time nominees for the Diego Martin Regional Corporation would be screened.
