Tewarie: Government shouldn’t blackmail Cane Farmers

MP for Caroni Central, Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie
I am happy to learn that the Government has agreed to pay out the EU money collected by Government some time ago to Cane Farmers.
I wrote the Minister of Planning and Development 3 weeks ago asking that she indicate the date of disbursement for farmers. She has not yet replied and the Government did not indicate a date for disbursement in the Cabinet announcement.
I would appreciate if the Government would indicate the date of disbursement of payment to Cane Farmers.
I also wish to indicate that the Government should not blackmail Cane Farmers into signing NEW terms of agreement for disbursement when terms of agreement were already formally agreed and signed by four Cane Farmers organizations and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Planning and Development.
Government is Government and continuity of Government agreements is a reasonable assumption in democratic states. The Rowley Government would do well to acknowledge this time honoured principle.
