TANCOO: That is Why Nobody Can Trust This PNM Government
“The recent judgement by the Privy Council highlighted the undemocratic and anti-democratic action of this PNM government. Further, the hypocritical attempt by the sitting Attorney General Reginald Armour to defend this abuse of office is just another reason why no one can trust this PNM Government “. That is the view of Oropouche West MP Davendranath Tancoo.
According to Tancoo, “Listening to a senior Cabinet Minister, paid by the taxpayer, desperately try to manipulate facts to misdirect the same taxpayers and even resorting to what can only be considered threats, signals to every right thinking citizen that this PNM Rowley Regime is not interested in the welfare of citizens and would stoop to any level in an attempt to cover up their misconduct.”
MP Tancoo declared “At a time when Armour and his gang should be coming clean with the population, they choose to obfuscate and delay. Last week Ministers of Government sought to scandalize the patriots who have now successfully challenged the PNM’s illegal action.”
The Oropouche West MP who is also the Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance said further, “This country is in a state of tyranny, where citizens are forced to take legal action to defend themselves from government overreach. The fact that so many legal matters are judged in favour of citizens, is clear evidence of the abuse by the State.”
What has become painfully obvious over the last seven and a half years is this government’s willingness to bend, manipulate and possibly even break the law to suit the private and personal agendas of the members of the PNM hierarchy.
This tyranny and abuse of office must stop. It is clear that the Prime Minister will continue to turn a blind eye to serious allegations of corruption, blatant incompetence and apparent misconduct of his Ministers. Instead he continues to endorse his Ministers’ shameful conduct. Worse, the PNM continues to show an open preference to engage in character assassination and scandalisation of persons who dare speak out. This is a clear and present threat to every citizen and to our democracy. If the government is not FOR the people, then it is AGAINST the people.”
Tancoo notes “This case was never about one political party or another. Regardless whether you are UNC or PNM, you deserve to have the right to vote and no politician of any party should be allowed to take that precious right from you.
The Law Lords in paragraph 34 of their judgement underscored this fact when they stated:
“It is inimical to a representative democracy that the representatives are chosen by anyone other than the electorate. It is not for Parliament, still less the Government, to choose the representatives.”
Tancoo cautioned, “We have seen what happens when politicians attack democracy. Look no further than our closest neighbour’s government attack on its own people. We have witnessed the destruction of Venezuela from only eight miles away and we live with the consequences of the destruction of their democracy every day.”
“This Rowley Regimes’ abuse will not stop until more people emulate the courage of patriots like Ravi Balgobin Maharaj, Anand Ramlogan, Kamla Persad Bissessar and the UNC, to demand truth, justice and accountability. ”
“Trinidad and Tobago deserves better. Good people of all political persuasions must stand together to protect our precious right to vote.”
