Soft man transcends party lines
The Editor:
I fully agree with Prof Selwyn Cudjoe in an article he wrote in one of our daily newspapers where he stated that the comments made by Ms Robinson-Regis about “soft man” in one of her speeches in the PNM’s upcoming internal elections highlights the problem of a structural problem that transcends party lines.
As he rightly stated, language matters. The message that we send to our youths can be very powerful, especially when they are enmeshed in popular culture. For far too long, the messages spoken are left to be interpreted by the listener and often ends up in the wrong direction.
He claimed that women dignity and equality should be of paramount in our society and claims that this type of behaviour should be a thing of the past.
What was critical in all of this was that he clearly stated that he was a PNM member and not condoning this type of behaviour within his party.
I believe that it should not be condoned in society in general.
Kudos to you Prof. Cudjoe for speaking out on this matter. It is surely more meaningful when that assessment can come from someone within the party itself.
