MP Rambally expresses deep concern over attack on Prison Officer and Deputy Commissioner
It is with profound concern and dismay that I address the recent gun attack on a prison officer in Barataria, which took place earlier today. I want to extend my heartfelt thoughts and support to the affected prison officer, his family, and the entire law enforcement community during these trying times.
The attack, which is suspected to have been targeted at Deputy Prisons Commissioner Sherwin Bruce, is a chilling indication of the dangerous threats that prison officers face daily. Their commitment to ensuring the security and rehabilitation of inmates in our penal system is a vital service to our nation. We owe them our gratitude and unwavering support.
The safety and well-being of our prison officers are of paramount importance to the community and to the nation as a whole. Incidents such as the one that unfolded today serve as stark reminders of the risks and challenges faced by our dedicated prison officers in the line of duty. We cannot and must not tolerate violence against those who uphold the law and maintain order in our society.
I firmly call upon Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher to take swift and decisive action in response to this incident. We must ensure that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice. The safety of our prison officers and their families must be the top priority in these investigations.
Moreover, we cannot overemphasize the urgency of addressing security concerns within our correctional facilities, such as the installation of jamming devices to curb illicit activities orchestrated by inmates. The safety of our prison officers is inextricably linked to the safety of our communities. I urge the relevant authorities to prioritize these security measures and expedite their implementation.
As the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West, I will continue to stand in solidarity with our dedicated law enforcement officers and advocate for the protection and well-being of those who work tirelessly to ensure the security and rehabilitation of inmates in our prisons.
