MP AMEEN pleads with the Minister to fix St. Augustine Bridges
Rains and floods have caused sink holes to develop next to Dry River Bridge on Orange Grove Road in St. Augustine. The retention wall of the bridge has significantly cracked, and the wall is collapsing.
The Bassie Street Bridge over the Blackman Ravine in Spring Village is also in a worsening and collapsing state and the Blackman Lane Bridge in Curepe needs to be raised.
Today, MP Ameen inquired in Parliament from the Minister of Works and Transport when the said bridges will be repaired. The Minister stated that these bridges fall under the purview of the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation, and not the Ministry of Works and Transport.
However, MP Ameen indicated, “the Minister knows that Regional Corporations do not receive adequate levels of funding to undertake the repair of these bridges.”
MP Ameen is therefore appealing to the Minister of Works and Transport to approve this project since regardless of whether the bridge falls under the purview of local government, the regional corporations or the Ministry, the Government is ultimately responsible.
MP Ameen insists, “we cannot sit idly by and wait until someone is seriously injured or dies for action to be taken. We need urgent action!”
