Message to the citizens of Trinidad & Tobago on the occasion of Easter from the Leader of the Opposition
Christians around the world will celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ this weekend, and with those celebrations will come a renewal of hope, love and harmony.
Ethnic harmony, cultural diversity and religious unity define the peace we enjoy today, and the path we have taken to live, work and grow together. Yes there are issues such as crime and fears over personal safety that have caused us no end of anxiety. But if we are to achieve more, do better, become greater, we must begin by being thankful for what we already have.
We must also appreciate that while there will come moments that we oppose each other in our public duty, what must always define us is our peaceful enjoyment of our liberties, together.
With our loyal dedication to freedom and democracy, and indeed the mercy of God, we in Trinidad & Tobago are shielded from some of the harrowing tragedies around the world.
On Tuesday, explosions rocked Belgium’s Brussels Airport triggering widespread panic. While Belgium is a sovereign nation with its own flag and allegiance, the people of Belgium are our fellowmen.
And even as we consider the hardships we face as a people in our continuous search of happiness and prosperity, let us consider the terror and tragedy faced by the people of Belgium, and millions around the world as we count our blessings and send them our prayers.
Indeed, let us consider the people and families of Trinidad and Tobago who are today still contending with the tragedy of loss of their loved ones.
It is for each one of us to consider our place in the world, and our contribution to ensure that at the end of our lives, we would have given something back to a world that has given us life and sustenance. Here in Trinidad and Tobago, the Christian community has made a remarkable contribution to our progress as a nation in every field of endeavour.
And as our Christian brothers and sisters celebrate love’s triumph over hatred; good’s triumph over evil and Christ’s resurrection, let us all, each and every one of us, join hands and celebrate with them, pray with them and strive with them.
It is for us to know what we have, give thanks for what we have gained, and commit to protect the nation we have all built together. As I wish the Christian community a happy and holy celebration, I send my best wishes to all citizens for a Happy Easter. May God Bless our nation.
