Cabinet has approved measures to make electricity more accessible and affordable to lower income earners.
Speaking at Wednesday’s Post Cabinet Media Briefing, the Minister of Public Utilities, Mr. Nizam Baksh, said as of March 2013, there were 1,286 applicants for electricity under the Utilities Assistance Programme.
“What we have recognised from our surveys is that there are many persons on the lower rung of the economic ladder that they are unable to meet their bills but have surpassed the 400 kilowatt per hour and what we have done here is that the Cabinet has agreed to increase this from 400 to 500.”
He said this country has the lowest electricity rates in the Caribbean.
