Eid Mubarak from the Leader of the Opposition
Eid Mubarak to my fellow citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who are celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan. As we come together to mark this blessed occasion, I extend my warmest wishes to all of you.
Eid-ul-Fitr is a time of joy and celebration. It marks the end of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, reflection and charitable giving. This year we were able to once again gather for Iftar, the evening meal to end the fast, and it was my pleasure to meet and spend time with so many of my Muslim brothers and sisters.
Today, families, friends, and communities will gather to give thanks for the blessings received during the Holy month of Ramadan and to seek forgiveness for any transgressions.
As we celebrate Eid, we are reminded of the social and economic challenges that our country faces. Our nation is reeling from unacceptably high levels of crime and violence, and many of our fellow citizens are struggling to make ends meet due to the high cost of living and joblessness. I commend the Muslim community for their generosity, especially during this time, shown to those in need.
Eid-ul-Fitr is a time to reflect on the values that are central to Islam – compassion, generosity, and unity.
These values are more important than ever as we face the challenges of today and the uncertainties of tomorrow. We must continue to show compassion and be generous in our support towards those who are suffering, and we must unite as a people to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
As the Leader of the Opposition, I reaffirm my commitment to working with all stakeholders to address these challenges. We must work together to build a stronger, more prosperous Trinidad and Tobago.
On behalf of the United National Congress and my own behalf, I wish all of you a happy and blessed Eid-ul-Fitr. May this joyous occasion bring you and your loved ones peace, happiness, and prosperity. Eid Mubarak!
