Police on mobile patrol today in the Carli Bay area which lies in the constituency of Couva North, discovered a man in the swamp behaving suspiciously. As they pursued him, he retaliated by launching a grenade at them. He was later apprehended and is in police custody.
We are now seeing a trend of hand grenades being used by criminals. It seems as though there is a high influx of arms and ammunition getting into our country and it is alleged that they are coming from Venezuela as weapons may be traded for food and other basic amenities due to their current economic situation.
The opposition continues to call for crime talks with the three Ministers of National Security to no avail. Three weeks ago Central witnessed a bloody weekend where 14 persons were killed in 72 hours. This triggered me to write to the Minister of National Security requesting a meeting with the Central MPs and other relevant stakeholders. The Minister to this day has failed to respond to my letter. Subsequent to that I wrote to the Prime Minister asking for him to instruct his Ministers of National Security to meet with the Opposition MPs for crime talks. There has been no response thus far from the Prime Minister, National Security Ministers and or their offices.
Again I make the call for the Ministers of National Security to meet with the Central Opposition members and other relevant stakeholders for crime talks in light of the current and worsening crime situation in Central Trinidad.
