Carlsen Field Homework Centre
On Wednesday 10th July, 2013 the Minister of the Ministry of the People and Social Development Dr. the Honourable Glenn Ramadharsingh opened the Carlsen Field Homework Centre at Pipecon Road Carlsen Field to residents within the district. This is a pilot project that is the first of its kind done through the Poverty Reduction Programme.
In his feature address, Minister Ramadharsingh asserted the importance of homework for teachers and parents for the benefit of children. Dr. Ramadharsingh reinstated that Homework can accomplish the goal that many educational entities have – creating lifelong learners.
Further, it was noted that, “not all children have access to the resources nor the family structure to undertake the responsibility of completing homework assignments” and as a result of this, after-school care or homework centres were created to address the increasing number of children who were left without supervision.
As part of the Ministry’s drive to reduce poverty, this Centre will cater directly to the homework needs of children from Primary School straight through Secondary School. Computer Literacy programmes and computers will be available to children using the Centre.
Ten (10) computers were provided by the Information Technology Department of the Ministry. Tutors will be selected from the area and will be paid by the Ministry of the People and Social Development. The Homework Centre will be opened initially from Monday to Thursday from 4.00 pm to 6.00pm and will accommodate approximately thirty (30) children of different ages. In building on another successful initiative, the Ministry is proud to relate its continued successes.
