$.25m bail for ILP candidate
Kerwin Bucchan, one of the Independent Liberal Party’s (ILP) candidates for the local government elections, was granted $250,000 bail yesterday on the charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition and shooting with intent.
Police prosecutor Sgt Shiva Boodoo told the court he had not received “anything official” from Interpol as it related to Bucchan.
At Bucchan’s first court appearance last week, police had asked for time to contact Interpol to find out whether Bucchan had any pending or previous criminal charges.
Bucchan is before the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court charged with allegedly shooting at Mohammed Ali and Yaseen Ali, and shooting with intent at Kareem Ali, a child, to do grievous bodily harm while at Moonstone Crescent, Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas, last week Tuesday.
He is also charged with possession of a Taurus .45 pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition to endanger life.
The charges were laid by PCs Arshad Mohammed and Narendra Beharry of the North Eastern Division Task Force.
Bucchan, 38, is the candidate to contest the seat for the Morvant area in the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation in the October 21 election.
Interim leader of the ILP Jack Warner has spoken in support of Bucchan, saying he was innocent until proven otherwise.
Yesterday, defence attorney Ann Marie Phillip told the court her client was entitled to bail, which could be set with conditions.
Senior Magistrate Gillian Scotland placed Bucchan on $250,000 bail with clerk of the peace approval.
He was ordered to return to court on November 7.
