This is a country of many diverse races and cultures. We came here through various systems and for diverse economic reasons, however there is one constant, our ancestors toiled and sweated to lay the foundations for the development of this blessed country. It would be unfair to say any one group did more than the other, in fact each group contributed in its own way to create the beautiful cultural milieu that is admired throughout the world.
When we look at our achievements as a young, striving nation, it is reason to be proud. Proud of our scholarship, proud of our athletics, proud of our creativity, proud of our diversity. However, should we be satisfied? We need to ask ourselves, as a nation, are we doing enough to reach our potential? The sweat of the past that nourished and facilitated our dreams in the present and in the future, how are we to pay tribute to that? It is a known fact that the level of our work ethic is constantly being lessened and lessened. The demand for the quick almighty dollar and the desire to get something for nothing has weakened the foundations that our ancestors gave their blood and sweat to build. A selfish few in society refuses to work hard and take the necessary steps to continue building the magnificent country that we can become. People readily quote the Singaporean model as one we should emulate, but we lack one key element that is needed to emulate their success. We lack the singular vision of where we want this nation to go. All Singaporeans are fully aware of what their country means to them and what it takes to make them great and they fully live that mantra. I am afraid we lack such vision.
Our ancestors arrived and gave us a tremendous opportunity. However, we are dishonouring their efforts by the choices we making. Let us put Trinidad and Tobago first, put this country right, and the prosperity we so crave will no doubt flow for all. Look at Singapore!
