Quite recently I heard the Attorney General speaking about the need to review our national watchwords, specifically in reference to the word “tolerance’. As I sit here reflecting on this Divali day, I cannot agree with him more.
As I make my way to my Hindu friends home tonight to celebrate Divali with them, I certainly don’t get the sense that they tolerate me and vice versa. We are more like family and I feel a significant bond with them. Also at Eid time, the feeling is mutual with my Muslim brothers and sisters.. I am Catholic and at Christmas time all are welcome in my home. I also feel a sense of kinship with my Afro-Trini brothers and sisters. We are all one happy family, nobody has to tolerate anybody, in fact we welcome and appreciate each others differences.
It is for this reason that this country is such a paradise. We need to strive to ensure that this remains so for all time. We need to weed out all the elements that are working to break this down. It is for this reason we should change that word “tolerance” to something better reflecting our true feelings
