Khadijah: Jack could be my grandpa
KHADIJAH Ameen, the United National Congress (UNC) candidate in the upcoming bye- election in Chaguanas West, is appalled that a person old enough to be her grandfather is launching personal attacks on her.
But despite the “attacks” Ameen, 32, gave the assurance she does not intend to engage in any bacchanal or mudslinging with her opponent, former MP Jack Warner, 70.
Ameen also admitted she was “horrified” that persons campaigning with her are being intimidated by other persons.
“What I am horrified by, is the fact that more and more the people who are campaigning with me are being targeted and intimidated by other people. I will not be involved in any mudslinging. It is appalled to see a man who is old enough to be my grandfather, attacking me in the worst way personally,” Ameen said.
She was speaking to reporters yesterday while at a distribution ceremony of 30 Minor Repair Reconstruction Grants held at Devi Mandir, New Settlement, Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas.
Ameen, chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, said there was a concentrated effort to attack her character and promised to continue to walk and work for the people of Chaguanas West.
Also running for the post of MP is PNM candidate Avinash Singh, 24.
Warner, now leader of the Independent Liberal Party, resigned as the MP in May.
Ameen said all the work in Chaguanas West was done by the People’s Partnership Government.
“All of the Ministries that deliver, deliver because there is a partnership drive towards a certain type of development. There is a focus on areas which were previously neglected. There are several other programmes which ensure that people all over the country do not require a party card to get assistance,” she noted.
When asked about the timing of the distribution, Ameen said it had noting to do with her campaigning, adding she attended several similar distribution ceremonies by the National Commission for Self Help. The commission is an agency of the Local Government Ministry.
