Quality family time is essential
Dear Editor:
Many of societies problems are blamed on the breakdown of family life. Parents are too busy with their day to day activities which results in them not spending enough quality time with their children. Those parents who can afford it supplement their lack of quality time with their children with computer games and the latest technology gadgets. Those who can’t, often single parents struggling to make ends meet, leave their children up to their own devices, sometimes with dire consequences. It cannot be disputed that there is no substitute for quality time with your children in order to mold them into upstanding young men and women.
I often wonder, how do Parliamentarians meet the minimum quota of quality time with their families given their hectic schedules? They are normally in Parliament for hours on end, if they are ministers they have ministerial duties, constituency responsibilities for members of Parliament, political meetings and the list goes on. I am aware that they put themselves in that position to serve the people and they knowingly make the sacrifice of giving up their family life, however, could they not be allowed just a little time to spend with their loved one? The job of a member of Parliament has some perks, but family life is definitely not one of them. However, it is admirable that the Prime Minister is sacrificing time from her obviously busy schedule to spend some quality time with her grandson. She would have known that she would face severe criticisms from her detractors for her trip to Brazil, but she decided to take this trip in order to spend quality time with a grandson. What a great mother and grandmother!
