Happy over ‘Land for the Landless’
THE EDITOR: The cost of living in this country is really too high. I recently got married to my husband. We both are graduates from the University of West Indies and are permanently employed. However, we are forced to still live at his parents’ because our combined income before tax cannot pre-qualify us for the homes priced in the real estate market.
We applied for an HDC house but we were informed that there is no guarantee that we will be assigned a house anytime soon as the demand for homes is greater than the Government’s ability to supply them. It is even more frightening when I see the Ministry of Housing distributing houses to persons who have been waiting for over 30 years.
I am, however, happy that the Government’s latest initiative, the Land for the Landless will be drawn next week. My husband and I immediately submitted an application when the initiative was originally announced by Dr Moonilal, Minster of Housing.
Even though, there are 10,000 applications and only 500 persons will be randomly selected my husband and I are hopeful that we will be chosen.
I would like to express best wishes to the successful applicants regardless if we are chosen. In addition, I would like to thank the Government for giving everyone an equal opportunity.
