Mayor Tim Kee should resign now in light of his comments criticizing women for practising vulgarity and lewdness and alluding this to cause of death of Japanese pan player, Asami Nagakiya. Where an autopsy is yet to be carried out on the dead woman to determine cause of death and an investigation to be carried out by the Police, we have the Mayor of Port of Spain already interfering in a police investigation by publicly giving the cause of death. This is highly unacceptable especially where according to him the dead woman may have been responsible for her own demise. It is also an insult to Japanese women by suggesting such.
As the former Minister of State in the now defunct Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development, the behaviour and style of dress of women should not be seen as an invitation to rape and murder. As a country we have been engaged in educating our people for years about respect for our mothers, sisters and daughters and moving away from the culture of abuse towards our women.
The safety and security of all our people falls under the purview of the state, particularly the Ministry of National Security where a statement was issued that for Carnival 2016, 6000 police officers were deployed. Where were these police officers dispatched? Were there any around the savanna for the duration of Carnival celebrations?
These are the questions the mayor should be asking and not laying blame on the perceived actions of the dead Japanese woman.
