Preserve our heritage
I was overjoyed to hear Minister Clifton De Coteau announce the release of funds for immediate stabilisation works and restoration of “Mille Fleurs”. With one international bank and two foreign missions already waiting in line to lease the historic property from Government once it is restored, the vast sum spent will eventually be recovered.
This adaptive reuse of the building will also ensure a portion is kept open to the public after being suitably furnished and outfitted, in keeping with its historic origins. Its detailed architecture and artistic craftsmanship will be preserved for future generations while affording us a glimpse into the past.
Although this restoration effort is long overdue, one can only applaud the Prime Minister and Cabinet for taking action before the building collapses. Let’s hope this starts a serious national conversation about kick-starting diversification of our economy through heritage tourism.
Everyone loves Trinidad and Tobago because of our interesting and vibrant blend of cultures. Our beautiful historic buildings are a fundamental part of our heritage, having been created by our very own artisans of the past. They need to be preserved as the original landscape for what makes us truly unique.
