Impressed by the level of development
Dear Editor:
While driving along the north-south highway quite recently, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the level of development taking place in our country. As I passed Mt. Hope and drove through the Grand Bazaar interchange, I could help but notice how this looks like any major intersection in those metropolitan cities we so love and admire. As I continued, I passed Chaguanas, and I saw the University of the West Indies Open Campus taking shape.
I continued on and I came upon that magnificent building to my right, the Aquatic Center, in Couva. I drove a little further, and then I saw a hospital building built in record time. Thank goodness the ghost of Scarborough hasn’t haunt this one. What impressive development for central Trinidad.
I drove a little further and I came upon a sore point in my journey. A billion dollar white elephant that is still bleeding our treasury. An example of mismanagement and corruption of the highest order. We even had the temerity to name it after one of the national treasures, Mr. Brian Charles Lara. How unfitting to the great batsman!
After regaining my composure after seeing such wastage, I continued my journey and I came upon the newest addition to this national treasure chest, the Golconda interchange. Expertly build and in record time, it is proof to what we are capable of if we put our minds to it. I continued on, driving on the new portion of highway as I approached Debe. I could see the new University of the West Indies campus in the distance, being built in record time also.
All this development along a highway! I could only draw one conclusion, that development along a highway’s course goes hand in hand. If this is the case, bring on the highways forthwith.
