Caroni Central Executive Council Hits Government For Its Lip Service in Bret Floods
Caroni Central Constituency Executive is totally upset with the slow pace of intervention to the flood victims in the area by the Government.
Communities like Caparo, Freeport, Todds Road, Carlsen Field, Palmiste and Preysal have been seriously affected with floods, lost of appliances, social and economic immobility, and this signals that the Government was too caring .
Despite the announcement that Cabinet has approved $25 million fund to assist the affected communities, the Caroni Central Executive calls on the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services to establish quick-fix centres at strategic locations to effect easy and quick processing of applications and dispensation of funds.
The Member of Parliament, Dr Bhoe Tewarie, was swift in meeting the residents of affected communities and provided hampers and other forms of support, for which we congratulate him.
We feel that the Government has not put the necessary systems and processes to take control of the floods and other ancillary services in the moment of need and deprivation. We are totally in dismay when school children were not able to attend school because their books and uniforms were all destroyed by the raging bodies of water. Most students are still not able to enter their classrooms.
Our hearts went out to the countless senior citizens and handicapped persons who had no choice but to wobble in the dirty water. The Caroni Central Constituency Council has called on government to revisit its Emergency Disaster Plan in order that such weaknesses do not rear their ugly heads in such cases of emergency again.
