UNC San Fernando West Calls on Junia Regrello to Resign
The United National Congress San Fernando West Executive is deeply troubled by reports published in the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper on 17 July 2022, detailing certain actions taken by the current Mayor of San Fernando, Junia Regrello.
These reports suggest that Mr. Regrello acted ultra vires to his office and the council of the San Fernando City Corporation. Permission to occupy state land was allegedly granted solely to an individual without any approvals from the Land Settlement Agency or the buildings department of the San Fernando City Corporation or the Commissioner of State Lands. According to the report, the lands in question are state lands which do not fall under the purview of the Corporation.
San Fernando has always been a city run on sound principle and the rule of law. As a responsible minority within the council, our UNC councilors and aldermen work diligently to uphold these standards to ensure transparency and accountability in the conduct of the affairs of the City of San Fernando. On this matter, they were even supported by multiple members of the ruling PNM within council.
In the interest of maintaining these principles, we hereby call on Junia Regrello to tender his resignation forthwith, having brought the Mayor’s office and the entire corporation into disrepute. The UNC will also pursue this matter further with the Commissioner of State Lands to ensure that no person is allowed to break the law with impunity.
