It is with great sadness that we awoke as a nation this morning to learn of the passing of His Excellency Arthur NR Robinson, Former President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The United National Congress wishes to extend our sincerest condolences to the immediate family of the Former President and by extension the family of Trinidad and Tobago.
His Excellency Robinson will forever be remembered in our hearts and his legacy as a true patriot is etched in our nation’s rich history. Our country will always owe a great sense of gratitude to Mr Robinson who showed how great a manner of man he was as he stood tall and valiantly during the 1990 attempted coup.
As Prime Minister and Head of Government, even while under threat of losing his own life, Mr Robinson defended our democracy, freedom and liberty by his famous words “attack with full force”. His duty to country and to his people during this time reminds us all today of our duty to serve our nation and fellowmen wholeheartedly.
He is the only person to hold the offices of Chief Secretary of the THA, Prime Minister and President of the Republic, his style of leadership and the magnitude of the gentleman embodied the true Trinbagonian that he was.
Internationally, he is recognised for his proposal that eventually led to the creation of the International Criminal Court for which we can boast of having citizens of Trinidad and Tobago appointed consecutively in the persons of His Excellency President Anthony Carmona SC. and now Justice Geoffrey Henderson.
Indeed His Excellency Arthur NR Robinson will forever be remembered both locally and internationally for his influence towards the development and progress of all people and today because of his outstanding contribution though we mourn his passing, we as a nation has reason to be proud of his achievements.
Surely he has fought the good fight, he has finished the course, and he has kept the faith. May his soul find eternal peace.
