At the recent Fifth Anniversary Rally of the People’s Partnership, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar coined what has the potential to be the most politically prophetic statement for 2015. Her premonition was that, Trinidad and Tobago would “see in the coming months, even more than has happened in the past five years, believe it or not, many more scurrilous lies and attacks being hurled at our Partnership our Members and myself, as the Prime Minister”. At that political meeting she advised, “I want to say to you, do not fear them, do not let them deter you or break your spirit and drive. Do not fall for the lies and desperation”.
It was not surprising therefore to read one newspaper report today which makes allegations of a “cover up” of an investigation into a certain discovery at the PM’s residence in 2013. Not surprising simply because the source of the allegation has a developed a proclivity and consummate penchant to distract. How an extract of a police diary of April 2013 suddenly makes its way in the public domain befuddles? What the source of the allegation has prompted is an indictment against our police service which they should resist and condemn. Moreso, it is frightening that the source was once the head of a Ministry entrusted with the safety of the person as enshrined in our Constitution. Even more fear-provoking than the latest cinema version of Poltergeist is that the source of the alleged cover ups, by virtue of leading a political party also aspires to be the Prime Minister of the land.
Not only was the Prime Minister right when she forewarned, but it appears we may be in for a frightening replication of political history when a former associate of the US Drug Enforcement Agency had advised that he knew of a plot to destabilize certain officials with the planting of drugs and weapons in concealed places like water tanks in 2002 (http://legacy.guardian.co.tt/archives/2006-01-22/news1.html).
The obscurity of these allegations has political precedent, the framers of which would do well to research.
The potential to build resolve supersedes the intention to break spirits. Keep it coming and make the people stronger!
