Tancoo: Rohan Sinanan is a failure
Today, following heavy rainfall, an existing landslip in Syne Village, Penal along the S.S. Erin Road, collapsed further making the roadway impassable. Yesterday MP for Oropouche West, Davendranath Tancoo and Councillor for the area Romona Victor, visited the landslip and spoke to residents and commuters who expressed their grave concerns that this very collapse of the roadway will occur, as well as cause further damage to properties nearby.
Tancoo stated that one year ago he pointed out that the roadway was collapsing and had become a single lane along this main thoroughfare between Penal and all points south including Siparia, Los Iros, Erin, etc. It took months before some action was taken and the problem was allegedly repaired and the roadway patched. Councillor Victor and the MP had expressed grave dissatisfaction about the quality of repairs done. Mere months later, the road began to collapse again reverting to a single lane.
Today the road has been rendered impassable. The Oropouche West MP demanded to know what assessment was done before the work was undertaken and how much money was spent. “Clearly the underlying cause of the landslip has completely missed the Minister which is why all that money was wasted” said Tancoo. Again, commuters in south Trinidad are being made to suffer because of the incompetence of the Minister of Works and Transport. “I don’t know why this Minister seems to have such disdain for citizens of South Trinidad.” Tancoo said. Councillor Victor added “South people pay taxes too! We are people too! We deserve better from this Minister!”
More than this, the residents showed the MP and Councillor the massive cracks that have emerged in their homes as a result of the road damage over the last two years and complained that despite their pleas, no representative of any Ministry came to speak to them to explain what was happening or to offer them some compensation so that they could repair and protect their properties. One very elderly resident whose house bears significant cracks stated, that she was fearful whenever rain falls that her home would collapse on her.
Tancoo declared “It is an obscene shame that the Minister has waited so long to act and now citizens have to spend hours and significant costs using alternative routes to get to and from their destinations.” This is a major road but South Trinidad continues to suffer from the disdain of this Minister.
MP Tancoo declared “This is not the only incident. This is not the only landslip. This is not the only failure of the Minister resulting in damage to property, excessive cost and tremendous inconvenience.” He urged affected citizens to speak up and speak out and let Minister Sinanan know how they feel about how they are being mistreated. Tancoo added, “Maybe then Minister Rohan Sinanan will start treating citizens of South Trinidad as if they matter.”
