Put politics aside
The Editor:
Criminal activity in Trinidad and Tobago has been and still is a controversial topic. Murders generally rose every year from 1999 to 2008. On further analysis, the trend since the early 1990’s was fairly constant until 2001 and from then onwards there was a rose to unprecedented figures. While we have seen a slight reduction over the last two years, one murder is too many. We live in a mental prison where we all are fearful be to outside after a hard day’s work. What type of life is that?
The citizens live a life of shell shock not realising that they are. Why should we have to adjust to that as a way of life?
The main problem for this is politics. When one party is in government, the other votes against any measures that can be implemented for a reduction in crime. For example, the present administration has brought many new legislation that could assist with crime reduction with most of them being unsupported by the opposition.
After the gruesome murder of Dana Seetahal, SC, all politicians should put aside the adversarial system of politics and work together to fight crime. Both the opposition and persons in government have good words to say about her contributions to society.
Her death presents an opportunity to create a new era for politics in T&T. Dr. Rowley, please don’t play politics with the lives of citizens and work with the government to reduce crime.
