Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, returned to Trinidad this morning after spending a week visiting her ailing sister in New York.

The Prime Minister was aboard BW 425 which landed at Piarco International Airport at 6.25 am. She was met on arrival by several Cabinet Ministers, including Minister of Labour, Errol Mc Leod, who acted as Prime Minister in her absence.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar left Trinidad on the morning of December 28 after learning that her sister, Sally Ahamad, was hospitalised.

Upon her return today, Mrs Persad-Bissessar confirmed that her sister underwent surgery last Thursday at Sloane Hospital in New York.

“She underwent the surgery for a stomach problem. We still do not know the full extent of her ailment, but we continue to pray for her recovery. When I left her yesterday, she was speaking, although she has been kept at the hospital. It has been a difficult time for all of us, but we continue to have faith in God,” the Prime Minister added.

She thanked all who have been praying for her sister.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar said she had planned to return on Friday night but due to the snow storm in New York, and the uncertainty on whether JFK International Airport would be open, she could not return until today.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar said she has been updated on all that have happened in Trinidad and Tobago during her absence.

The Prime Minister has several engagements in the coming week.
