PM SADDENED AT DEATH OF MOHAN JAIKARAN
I am deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Mr. Mohan Jaikaran, Chairman of WIN Communications, who passed away at his home in Trinidad on Sunday afternoon.
On my own behalf and on behalf of the government of Trinidad and Tobago I extend condolences to Mr. Jaikaran’s family and to his business associates at WINTV and Massala Radio 101.1 fm.
Mohan Jaikaran was a dedicated patriot who also served as Vice Chairman at Caribbean Airlines Limited until June 25, 2013.
He was a pioneering businessman in the media and entertainment sector, and a philanthropist with an eye for talent. He discovered many Trinidad and Tobago and Caribbean performers and gave them their first break.
He donated hugely to charity and was a community builder focusing on local talent and indigenous culture. He was a benefactor to the cultural industries.
Mr. Jaikaran was a very respected media executive and entrepreneur who established his business credentials in New York but always remained close to his homeland.
He returned to Trinidad in 2000 from New York to establish Radio Massala 101.1 fm in Chaguanas, a radio station that remains a popular broadcasting establishment in the crowded media landscape in our country. He later established WINTV that provided a wide variety of news, public information and a style of programming that appealed to the multicultural and mixed demographics of Trinidad and Tobago.
He also expanded the broadcast reach of WINTV to Canada and Great Britain, and had planned to enter the United States broadcasting market in the near future.
Trinidad and Tobago and the region have suffered a severe blow with the passing of Mr. Jaikaran. He was a humble man who had a passion for helping people while seeking no rewards for his kindness.
