PM: OJT/UN collaboration as a quantum leap forward
PRIME Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has described the new collaborative partnership of On the Job Training Programme (OJT) and the United Nations system of Trinidad & Tobago as “a quantum leap forward” for trainees who will now have exposure to work experience on the global stage.
Speaking at the launch of OJT Global at the Diplomatic Centre, Port of Spain on Thursday, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar described the programme as being “particularly close to my heart” and said: “The OJT programme presented an excellent opportunity for us to take a quantum leap forward through strategic partnerships and collaborations. And today, we have transformed the programme beyond its founding mission by partnering with the United Nations.”
Calling it an “enormous advance”, the Prime Minister said the OJT Global programme will open opportunities for our local participants to experience the challenges and demands of working in an international multilateral organization, as well as provide experience in the evolving philosophies which guide social and economic development and international relations.
She added: “This programme will instill much needed insight and knowledge into the workings of the international system, and will deliver a practical understanding of how truly globalized the world has become, and why it is essential that international cooperation and partnerships are strengthened.”
In thanking young men and women “who responded to the Government’s conversation on how we must progress”, the Prime Minister told OJT participants: “Your work, support and participation at whatever level you train at will have a positive impact on achieving intercultural dialogue and will influence how we develop socially and economically.”
Also telling trainees that the nation depends on them to be properly prepared for future leadership, the Prime Minister stated: “The OJT is the bridge that connects today, with tomorrow, providing the entry point for the young men and women who will one day take charge of our country. What this means is that its success will have a very real impact on whether Trinidad & Tobago can continue to deepen its mark in the region and in the world as a confident, educated and competitive society.”
The Prime Minister acknowledged Tertiary Education and Skills Training Minister, Fazal Karim’s work on advancing the programme, and thanked him, together with UN Resident Representative, Richard Blewitt and Microsoft Country Manager Microsoft Frances Correia for being the key drivers of OJT Global.
