PM meets with Martinique Leader
The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, met this afternoon with Mr. Serge Letchimy, President of the Regional Council of Martinique.
Both leaders discussed a number of issues, including energy, transport, exchange programmes, security and tourism.
The French island is interested in renewable energy and the proposed Caribbean Gas Line. The Martinique leader also want an improved air and maritime transportation system throughout the Caribbean. The visiting delegation is seeking cooperation in Higher Education.
During the discussions, Mr. Letchimy pointed out that the French had a particular expertise in natural disaster preparedness and in tackling crime.
The Martinique leader boasted of having excellent training facilities in tourism, and he is willing to offer professional training packages to the youth of Trinidad and Tobago.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar thanked the Martinique leader for the visit and promised greater cooperation and colloboration between the two countries. She noted that Mr. Letchimy had met with various Government Ministers since his arrival, and she was confident that Martinique will be an excellent friend to Trinidad and Tobago.
Since his arrival, Mr Letchimy has met with the Ministers of Energy, Trade, Foreign Affairs, and Planning and Sustainable Development. Tomorrow, he is due to meet with the Ministers of Education and Transport. Also attending today’s meeting was the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Roodal Moonilal.
