Opposition Leader writes Commissioner of Police, DPP on AG Al Rawi
Today at a media briefing, held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, Leader of the Opposition announced that she wrote letters to the Acting Commissioner of Police, Director of Public Prosecution and the Director of the Strategic Services Agency to request an investigation into the actions and statements of the Honorable Attorney General Mr. Faris Al Rawi regarding Interception of Communications by the Strategic Services Agency and Prosecutions commenced as a result thereof. (See attached the letters and four enclosures that accompany each letter.)
Based on an answer to an Opposition question in the Senate yesterday, by the Minister of Energy, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar also raised concerns about the allowances and remuneration paid to Mr. Gerry Brooks in his capacity as board member on nine state companies and amounting to approximately $83,000 per month. Of particular concern was that Mr. Brooks possibly holds further positions that were not included as part of the answer to the Senate question raised yesterday.
Further, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar asked for clarification as to who exactly speaks for the government, since the position articulated by the Minister of Energy, Ms. Nicole Olivierre yesterday in the Senate on the issue of a single person holding multiple board appointments seems to conflict with earlier statements made by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Colm Imbert as reported in the Newsday of Friday, March 18 2016 in an article captioned “Imbert reviews multiple board appointments”.
