Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Message for Lent 2025
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loosen the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? “(The Holy Bible, Isaiah 58:6)
As the 2025 Holy Lenten season begins, I extend my best wishes to Christians in Trinidad and Tobago, and globally, for a peaceful, blessed, safe season.
For Christians, Lent, the forty-day precursor to the holy observance of Easter, is a time to remember the immense sacrifice and suffering of the Lord and Saviour. It is a solemn season of deep reflection, renewal and rededication to God through fasting, prayers, charity and repentance.
It is a time when Christians ponder on the hindrances and challenges in their lives and commit to overcoming them. They rely on God’s strength and teachings to create better lives, communities and, by extension, a better nation.
Such devout prayers, charity and inspiring spirituality have uplifted the national community for generations, and this year, it will undoubtedly continue in this stead.
Traditionally, during Lent, there is an increase in Church services across the nation.
Unlike previous years, the 2025 Lenten season takes place under a State of Emergency, as Trinidad and Tobago is in the throes of an unprecedented crime and violence wave.
I therefore call on the police authorities to ensure that Christian devotees are safe to engage in their religious practices via increased police patrols at all churches throughout the country.
To my Christian brothers and sisters, as you embark upon this profound spiritual journey, I pray that your faith is rewarded and your relationship with God strengthened.
On this Ash Wednesday, may the ashes on your forehead be a reminder of God’s love and forgiveness. May this season of reflection bring you closer to God and fill your heart with His love. And may you find strength in prayer, courage in sacrifice, and grace in repentance.
I wish all a truly safe, blessed Lenten season.
