Nothing wrong with Defence Bill
THE EDITOR: I have been reading and seeing all the uproar about the Defence Bill which has been deemed by the media as “controversial”. I can’t grasp what is so “controversial” about this Bill though. Army officers have been working alongside police officers for years, the only difference now is that they would be given legal protection and powers of arrest similar to that of the police officers. What is so controversial? I think as per the usual “trini” we are blowing things out of proportion and straying from the real issue at hand.
There is no matter here to be scared of. I am surprised that we are more afraid of the army officers than the criminals who are murdering our friends, families and neighbours every day. Who are the real “killing machines”?
Do not be fazed. Crime is a real issue and we need real results.
I would like to urge the Independents to look deeper into the real crisis at hand in Trinidad and Tobago. Let’s put aside the politics for now and focus on the bereaved widow, father/motherless children, patients grasping to their lives at the hospitals or those in the psychiatric/therapist’s office. Think about the human rights of the little Trinbagonian child, the future of our nation, that are being snatched away when they are murdered, raped, deprived of their parents or pulled into gangs and prostitution.
We are under siege from these beasts and there is no politics to be played here. I am not telling the Independence to support this Bill. I am simply requesting that they train some deep consideration of the many victims crying out into their decisions.
I eagerly look forward to the Senate sittings on this Bill and the contributions of our Independents.
