More Than 500 Register for UNC Constituency Executive Elections
More than five hundred members of the United National Congress (UNC) have registered for the party’s constituency elections, the Party said Friday in a media release.
The elections are scheduled for February 27, 2016 and March 05, 2016 for 39 of the 41 constituencies in the country. Elections for the two Tobago constituencies have been deferred to a date to be announced. Nominations for the various positions closed Friday.
The vote is being held on the basis of a one-member, one-vote system, which the party uses for electing its leader and national executive. The UNC has more than 95,000 members.
“The fact that 500 people have registered shows a deep interest in our party and indicates that democracy is alive and well in the UNC”, the party stated.
“In some constituencies there may not be challengers, in which case the nominees would be declared elected without members having to vote,” it added. “That will be determined after the party’s elections officials complete the exercise of checking and validating all the applications.”
The party expects to complete that in a few days.
