Kamla wants urgent meeting with PM on crime
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has asked Prime Minister Rowley to consider assuming the mantle of the Ministry of National Security to deal with the crime situation which is spiralling dangerously out of control in the country.
In a letter to Dr Rowley, the Opposition Leader also asked for an urgent meeting with the Government and members of the national security teams so that the opposition can engage in a non-partisan dialogue on a way forward to combat the serious crime situation which has gripped the country. She alluded to the life, limb and property of every citizen which is now imperilled as criminals are merciless in their rampage even when it comes to snuffing out the lives of innocent children.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar further indicated to the Prime Minister that Trinidad and Tobago’s international image is being sorely tarnished which is impacting adversely on the country’s economic and investment opportunities and she hoped that this coming together of both the Government and Opposition will blossom into a joint anti-crime initiative.
The Opposition Leader in her letter to Dr. Rowley recalled that under her stewardship as Prime Minister, several joint Government-Opposition meetings were held with the goal of developing and implementing anti-crime initiatives and she is hoping that this spirit of cooperation which existed then can continue between the Rowley-led Administration and the Opposition.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar ended her letter to Dr Rowley saying that it was her sincere hope that he will accept the Opposition’s offer to work together in the best interest of the nation as a whole.
