Kamla: The Prime Minister is playing games with FATCA legislation
We have nothing to hide.
Twelve days ago I proposed that a Joint Select Committee be established but, the government has been politicking ever since.
Let’s get this done.
At the next Parliamentary sitting on Friday let’s establish a JSC to review the Bill.
We will meet Friday, Saturday and Sunday if we need to.
Let us meet and find common ground for the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
We do not think the Minister should have the power to look into the accounts of persons… That power should be exclusively with the Board of Inland Revenue.
Secondly the Minister should not have the power to add or take away from this law without coming back to the parliament.
These are some of the reasonable amendments we propose.
The major changes we propose are to clauses 5, 6, 7, 8, 21 and 25.
I clearly told the government in Parliament what issues we have and it is on Hansard for all to see.
I repeat our commitment to pass good FATCA law.
We call on government to stop posturing and let’s get to work.”
