ILP candidate pulls out race
AN Independent Liberal Party (ILP) local government candidate has pulled out of the election race.
On Friday, Regon Boxhill, who was vying for the Mon Repos/Navet seat, officially withdrew by submitting relevant documents to the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) office at City Hall, San Fernando.
He also visited the ILP’s headquarters in Chaguanas to inform ILP interim political leader Jack Warner of his decision via letter. The letter was hand delivered to the ILP coordinator for the southern district.
At the EBC’s office at City Hall, only two candidates’ names are listed on the notice board–People’s National Movement’s (PNM) Shaka Joseph and Benison Jagessar of the Congress of the People (COP)–to fight for the seat.
Boxhill, who is self-employed, lives at Princess Margaret Street, San Fernando.
He said the withdrew from the race after the ILP was allegedly unwilling to assist an 86-year-old with a wheelchair. He said the elderly person is living in the local government district that he had planned to contest.
Boxhill said there was also not enough support from the party, with promises but no action taken by the ILP.
“People are so educated, they are not voting because of a leader, they are voting for what they (the party) could represent and show,” said Boxhill.
Mon Repos/Navet was a PNM stronghold and much more needed to be done by candidates from other political parties in order to win the seat, he added.
