I warned you about splitting the vote
PRIME MINISTER Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Monday that she warned supporters against splitting the vote, but was largely ignored, and the result was a People’s National Movement (PNM) victory at the polls.
The Peoples Partnership’s campaign theme was to encourage supporters to “come back home” and not vote for the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) led by Jack Warner.
Addressing supporters at Rienzi Complex, Couva, after learning of the election result, Persad-Bissessar said “I warned you, you know. I warned you. I said the spilt vote, the green will not win. Who won? PNM! And let us not make that mistake again in St Joseph. Why do we continue to make this mistake every time? Why?”
She said: “ On this campaign trail I warned you. Some listened. Today the history is recorded. Today the numbers are telling us if we split the vote PNM will come back, and if the PNM come back, laptop gone.”
Persad-Bissessar listed a number of projects implemented by the UNC which she said would be dismantled if the party returned to government.
Persad-Bissessar said the best news for the election was that the UNC did not lose the Felicity/Endeavour seat to the ILP, considered a stronghold of Warner, the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West.
“Chaguanas we did not lose. The best news of all tonight. The green man gone. Felicity welcome back”, she said. Persad-Bissessar said at the end of the day, she was still the Prime Minister of the country and the People’s Partnership remained in government.
She told councillors and Members of Parliament who were present, that they needed to work hard to ensure the electorate received proper representation, and this was “ not a time to brew over defeat”.
Persad-Bissessar said: “Whoever has won, tomorrow morning, my Government we will work with you, why? Because we want to ensure that every citizen is represented. We want to ensure that we work with everyone. Guess why? This is not about party and politics. This is about the people of Trinidad and Tobago. This is about every one of you.”…READ MORE
