Grand Chemin Fishing Facility: Another Empty Promise for Moruga/Tableland?

Member of Parliament for Moruga/Tableland, Ms. Michelle Benjamin, MP,
I welcome the announcement of the opening of the Grand Chemin Fishing Facility, but I must ask: will this facility become just another example of grand empty promises to the people of Moruga/Tableland?
Much like the Agro-Processing Facility, which took years to operationalize and today employs only a handful of people, there are serious questions about the Grand Chemin facility’s long- term impact.
The facility, as it stands, is incomplete. The lack of a jetty makes it unsuitable for many fishermen who depend on proper docking facilities to do their work safely. If the government fails to address these fundamental issues, this project will likely fall short of meeting the needs of our fishing community.
What’s more, the government has yet to clarify:
• How many people will truly benefit from this facility?
• How many sustainable jobs will be created for our fishermen and their families?
• What incentives are in place to help the fishing industry thrive?
The fishing community is also grappling with a rising tide of crime. Many fishermen live in constant fear while carrying out their trade. It’s essential that this government addresses both infrastructure and security to protect the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea for their survival.
It’s time the government stopped making grand promises and started delivering real, sustainable change for the people of Moruga/Tableland. We deserve more than rhetoric—we deserve action.
